Meta has quietly released a new standalone app for Facebook Groups called Forum. The company appears to be positioning Forum as a Reddit-style platform for deeper discussions, real answers, and communities users care about.
The app was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra.
How Forum Works
Users can sign in to the Forum with their Facebook account. After login, the app loads their groups, profile, and activity. It also allows users to make posts with a nickname, similar to the option available in the regular Facebook app.
Meta said users’ groups will still exist on Facebook. Anything shared on the Forum will also be visible inside the same groups on Facebook.
Group Conversations
Meta says Forum’s feeds are centered on conversations inside groups. The company says the app is designed to show what real people are saying, instead of only highlighting trending content. The forum also makes it easier for users to continue discussions from where they left off.
AI Features
Forum includes an AI-powered Ask tab. The feature lets users ask questions and receive answers compiled from discussions across different groups.
Meta has also added an AI assistant for group administrators. The assistant is designed to help admins manage groups and moderate content.
This is not Meta’s first attempt at a standalone app for Facebook Groups. In 2014, the company launched a dedicated Groups app to help users share content across groups more easily. Meta later shut down that app in 2017.
Forum is one of two new apps Meta has launched in recent weeks. Last month, the company introduced Instants, an app that lets users share disappearing photos with Instagram friends.
The launches come as Meta pushes to release more standalone apps. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees that AI-driven efficiencies could allow the company to build more apps than before.
Referring to Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, Zuckerberg reportedly said they had discussed whether Meta could build 50 new apps. He added that the company should likely start with a few before trying to scale up that effort.
Meta Faces Copycat Concerns
Meta may see demand for more apps, but the response from consumers remains uncertain.
The company’s newer apps have drawn comparisons to existing services. Instants borrows ideas from BeReal and Snapchat, while Meta Edits, launched last year, has been described as similar to ByteDance’s CapCut.
Forum now appears to bring a Reddit-style experience to Facebook Groups, with AI tools added for users and administrators.
